MANILA – The month of June has been declared as Philippine Independence Month in Guam.

Guam Governor Eddie Calvo signed Proclamation No. 2015-055 on Monday, which also honors Filipino-Guamanians as part of this year’s commemoration of the 117th Anniversary of the Philippine Independence Day.

The proclamation highlights the continued historical and cultural connection between the Philippines and Guam that dates back hundreds of years ago.

It also emphasizes the contribution of Filipinos to the betterment of the island, as exemplified by the lives of the former co-exiles of Filipino revolutionary hero Apolinario Mabini who decided to remain on Guam, among them Leon Flores, Pancrasio Palting and Maximon Tolentino, and later became outstanding leaders and solid pillars of Guam society.

Philippine Consul General Marciano de Borja witnessed the signing ceremony together with Guam Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio, Filipino Community of Guam President Nita Baldovino, Senators James Espaldon and Dennis Rodriguez, Jr. of the 33rd Guam Legislature, and Agency for Human Resources Development (AHRD) Director, Dr. Sam Mabini.
